GLOSSARY OF NEWSGROUP TERMINOLOGY

  • Cancellation - When a message is removed from the server, and no longer shows up in the newsgroup to which it was posted.

  • Crosspost - A single message posted to many newsgroups at once.

  • Multipost - Many messages, all with the same content, each posted to a different newsgroup.

  • vCards - Small HTML files used as virtual business cards in place of a standard text signature. Many news readers are not able to read HTML, and so cannot read vCards.

  • Text messages
As mentioned in the vCard section above, many news readers in use on the Internet are not able to parse HTML. If you post in HTML, the people using such news readers will not be able to read your message, which narrows the audience of potential problem solvers for your request.

Web browsers with built-in news readers are able to read HTML. The news reader associated with a web browser will usually default to posting messages in HTML. In order to post plain text messages, you need to tell your news reader to post in text.

    Instructions for disabling HTML posting:
    • Netscape Communicator 4.5
      • Go to Edit | Preferences | Mail & Newsgroups | Formatting
      • Choose "Use the plain text editor to compose messages."
    • Outlook Express
      • Go to Tools | Options | Send
      • Under "News Sending Format," choose "Plain Text."

  • Flame - An abusive attack upon another person or their ideas.

  • Troll - A message posted for the sole purpose of annoying someone else into responding. Also applied to a person posting such a message.
