Common Problems
General SQL Links / Vendor Client Software Connection Guidlines
(Win3.1x, Win95, WinNT)
Successfully Install:
1)Appropriate network protocol for a connection to your sql server
(TCP/IP, SPX/IPX, NetBeui, etc.)
2)Your Server Vendor's (Sybase, Oracle, MS, etc.) Client software
3)Borland BDE and SQL Links
Test/Verify installation:
1)network protocol (connections to the various sql servers are
established using predetermined network protocols.)
Possible methods for testing the appropriate net protocol:
-log into network (SPX/IPX, NetBeui, etc)
-ping server (TCP/IP)
-attach to shared network drive (TCP/IP, NetBeui, etc.)
2)Vendor client software
Use your sql server's utility to verify a connection to your
sql server.
3)Borland Database Engine and SQL Links
Run the BDE Configuration Utility and verify that the chosen
SQL Links drivers appear on the DRIVERS page.
Also using the BDE Config Utility create an ALIAS with the
SERVER NAME, USER NAME, etc. settings entered appropriate to
your chosen server.
Test a connection via the BDE and SQL Links using the Borland
Database Desktop, Delphi/C++ application, or test utility via
the BDE ALIAS created above.
Common Problems:
Problem:
Required file not found by the server vendor's utility and or the
BDE/SQL Links.
Reason:
DOS/environment PATH not modified and/or APPLIED by the vendor's
installation program.
The Borland SQL Links (among other products) will need to find
specific file(s) to establish a connection to and communicate with
your chosen server (in many cases this is called the "database library").
Problem:
Incomplete or improper install of the server vendor's client software.
Reason:
1)Has the appropriate product/version been installed according to the
software vendor's documentation?
Refer to the written and/or electronic (README's, HELP files) for
additional information regarding sql server and client software
version(s).
2)Has the software appropriate to the operating environment (Win3.1x,
Win95, WinNT) and client application been installed?
A 32bit application will require 32bit server client software to
establish a connection, etc.
